Music is an incredible gift which can bring God’s children – young and old - together in songful expressions of gratitude, petition and praise. Let’s come together, making a commitment to practice well, and pray that we may be blessed by the Holy Spirit to share our deepest longings in making a joyful noise unto the Lord!
Vocalists – If you love to sing…You don’t need to have a solo quality voice. We need choral participants too! The ability to read music is helpful, but not required. A good ear is preferred. Of course, we are always excited to find new cantors as well!
Instrumentalists - you must have your own instrument and be fairly proficient on your instrument (meaning you have played for several years and probably recently)
If you happen to play piano, organ or guitar - and are somewhat skilled and experienced - please introduce yourself to me after Mass!

Our congregation - a growing mix of student, faculty, staff and community - truly appreciates what wonderful and heartfelt efforts our musicians bring to St Mary’s.
JOINING THE MUSIC MINISTRY!
This Spring 2017 we will continue to lead the congregational singing for three Sunday Masses at: 11 am, 1 pm, and 6 pm. January 22nd is the very first Sunday of the semester and we welcome you to come ONE HOUR before any of these Masses and rehearse in St. Joe's Library. Masses are held in St. Mary’s Chapel:)
CHOIR PRACTICE – 7:30 pm
Please come, get to know our returning choir/instrumentalist members, and prepare music for Sunday Mass liturgies! We will begin the semester singing the beautiful Curtis Stephan Mass of Renewal plus hymns and psalms from the Breaking Bread hymnal, Gather, Oramus Cantando, Taize, and much more.
CHOIR CONCERT & MONASTERY RETREAT
Soon we’ll also be preparing for a spring semester choir concert to be given at Sacred Heart Church. Every WEDNESDAY is scheduled as CHOIR PRACTICE night from 7:30 pm in St. Joe's Library and we encourage all vocalists and instrumentalists to join us!
In addition, we plan to schedule a spring semester half-day retreat to the Lufkin Monastery of the Infant Jesus (Cloistered Dominican Nuns) to include meditation, prayer, Q&A, and a mini-concert for the sisters.
Hope to see and HEAR you all soon!
God’s love and blessings,
Linda Parr Music Director
Linda is from Kent in Northeast Ohio where she and her family attended St. Patrick's Church. She has special memories of 8 years of St. Patrick’s School with the Sisters of the Holy Humility of Mary, daily Mass, and music sung at Stations of the Cross, First Holy Communion, Confirmation, and in honor of Mary during the month of May.
She eventually played organ for St. Pat's Masses while attending Kent State University where she met her future husband, Andrew. They both earned Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in piano. Linda also studied piano at the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music and then in Vienna, Austria with Andy who was a recipient of a Fulbright scholarship.
After several moves, starting a family, teaching piano, and being involved with music at churches in Ohio and Connecticut, Andrew was hired by SFA as Coordinator of Keyboard Studies and Linda became a piano instructor and later served as associate, co-director and director of the SFA Music Preparatory Division where she continues to teach piano; she also taught piano for 24 years as adjunct School of Music piano faculty.
While their children were young, she and Andrew attended and helped with music at Sacred Heart Church on North Street. When the Appleby Sand Road location become a reality they were instrumental in finding the organ and grand piano for the new church.
In 2003 when their youngest daughter left for college, Linda offered to help with the music ministry at St. Mary's. As SFA music faculty, she was in the unique position of being in the same building with music students which helped get things going. Presently the music ministry has grown to include director, assistant director, cantor and instrumentalist positions. The choir has sung sacred music concerts annually at St. Mary’s Chapel and Sacred Heart Church and the Multicultural Festival in Nacogdoches, at St. Patrick’s and the Dominican Monastery of the Infant Jesus in Lufkin, and at the Sisters of St Cecilia Dominican Monastery in Nashville TN.
