Marycruz Bazan is a senior at SFA, graduating with a degree in Psychology.
Why did you choose to attend SFA?
I came for orientation over the summer, and I just liked it. I liked the trees. I Iiked the flowers. I didn't know anything about the university, and I was just like, that's the schooI want to go to. It wasn't too far from home, and it just had life. Nature represents life in a school, and since I was in the top 10% of my class and could pretty much go anywhere, I decided on SFA.
How did you get connected with St. Mary's Catholic Campus Ministry?
Before I moved on on campus, my mom told me to look up Catholic churches so that I could go on Sundays, but the only one I could find was too far away, and since I didn't own a car, I couldn't attend there. On the Saturday I moved in, I saw the St. Mary's sign and was excited that I had found a church to go to. That Sunday I went to church at St. Mary's where Father Paul greeted me, and asked me a little about myself before Mass. After Mass, a number of the student leaders at St. Mary's approached me, asked me questions, and encouraged me to get involved with some of the groups.
What impact has St. Mary's had on you personally?
It has had a positive impact. From my freshman year until now, almost ready to graduate, I have grown a lot, not just in my personally (a little more outgoing),but spiritually. When I went to church when I was younger I didn't really know what it was. Coming to St. Mary's I had signed up for the SFA Awakening Retreat, and having never been to a retreat before, this was the first real experience I had with a spiritual community. Then, just maintaining that throughout these past years, knowing that it's okay to ask for others to pray for you, and to offer prayer for others. Being able to say those words to other people your age, or friends you can say, “hey, let's go to Mass” and not being looked at you weird or judge you.
I joined Kappa my freshman year, and became president shortly thereafter. Then, I joined CSO as an officer, was involved with CDA for a while, was an altar server, and co-led a Theology of the Body class. I've also done Bible studies with the Focus Missionaries. I also became a Eucharistic minister.
Have you adopted any special devotions?
Yes, I was given a prayer book after participating in a nun run, which I use for nightly prayer devotions.
What are you planning after graduation?
I plan to go back to Houston. I hope to work with DePelchin, a company where they work with kids that have autism or other special needs. My second choice is to work with CASA.
