Samantha Schroll is a senior at SFA, graduating this May with a major in Kinesiology and minor in dance.
Why did you choose to attend SFA?
I was looking for a smaller campus, not too big, and I was going to attend Sam Houston, but I decided to attend SFA because I didn't get into the dance program at SHSU. SFA was a beautiful campus and it was exactly what I was looking for. It also had a good Catholic campus ministry, that we heard about from a neighbor, and it wasn't too far from home.
How did you get connected with St. Mary's Catholic Campus Ministry?
St. Mary's was one of the reasons we came to visit SFA, and when we visited, we met Father Paul and two other students. One of the students, Erica Trabanino, took me under her wing. She was kind of like my mentor the entire first year. I loved it right away. I loved the church and the little courtyard.
What impact has St. Mary's had on you personally?
St. Mary's definitely had a huge impact on me, especially the first year. I started getting connected during all the events of welcome week. I pledged Kappa my first semester. It was the only semester I was in Kappa but it helped me transition. My Big is still one of my closest friends. That first week and first year, people really took me under their wings and I had instant friendships. The second year I started Dancers of the Son,and if it wasn't for St. Mary's, I don't know where I would have started that ministry. The support here from Jodi (campus minister) really helped. I've also been involved liturgically as a reader.
I've also grown spiritually. St. Mary's has helped me form my spiritual life. I started going to daily Mass, which I didn't do in high school. I also started going to adoration The people here have helped spiritually form me and given me tools that I didn't really know about before. They also encouraged me and kept me accountable. The support of St. Mary's has really helped me develop a more deeply personal relationship with God.
Have you adopted any special devotions?
Besides going to adoration, I also pray the St. Raphael and St. Josemaria Escriva novenas. I also read devotionals. I'm currently reading Battlefield of the Mind and Thought Conditioners.
What are you planning after graduation?
I am applying for jobs right now. I'm looking for something in the fitness and wellness industry, whether it's doing corporate wellness, or applying to a YMCA type job. There are two main routes I can go, Being a program coordinator, or being a fitness or exercise specialist. I'm applying for jobs in Lake Jackson, Houston and College Station. Hopefully I'll get a full time job somewhere, but my preference right now is to be close to home.
